Health Economics and Outcomes Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Our fellows are actively involved in specialty pharmaceutical utilization management as well as population-based research evaluations and collaborative projects with the pharmaceutical industry

Baylor Scott & White Health, in conjunction with the University of Texas College of Pharmacy, offers a two -year fellowship to prepare talented individuals with a strong interest in pursuing a Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR) career within managed care, pharmaceutical industry, consulting or academia.

Our fellows obtain a Master of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Division of Health Outcomes & Pharmacy Practicefrom the UT College of Pharmacy upon completion of the required didactic and experiential training courses and successful thesis defense.

We accept one fellow each year.

Due to the increasing importance that the US health care system places on improving quality and outcomes of health care services and products while reducing costs, there has been a huge reliance on HEOR to demonstrate value and help guide decision making through developing, translating, and communicating real-world evidence.

Throughout the program, our fellows:

  • Gain experience in utilizing medical/pharmacy claims and EMR data in protocol development, data collection, management, and analysis, effective presentation of results, and medical communications
  • Apply learned HEOR concepts and appropriate analytical methods in conducting retrospective database studies, prospective research studies, and economic modeling
  • Develop a functional knowledge of statistical software: SAS, SQL, STATA
  • Gain a holistic perspective of different healthcare stakeholders’ strategy:
    • Managed Care – Cost containment (quality & outcome metrics), innovative pricing strategies (value-based pricing), P&T, formulary development, pharmacy vs. medical benefit (specialty, biologics & biosimilars)
    • Pharmaceutical Industry – Value proposition via real-world evidence generation
  • Contribute to body of literature in the development and publication of abstracts, posters and manuscripts
  • Attend professional meetings and seminars
