PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

Our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at McLane Children's aims to expose and develop our residents by coaching, modeling, and facilitating the expanded pharmacist's role in direct patient care while preparing them for a pediatric PGY2 and BCPS certification

BSWH – McLane Children's Hospital offers an ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency designed to provide a broad experience in hospital pharmacy practice. Our residents focus on the comprehensive care of patients through evaluation and intervention of medication orders, interdisciplinary rounding, antimicrobial stewardship, transitions of care, education, and research.

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to developing clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

We accept one Resident each year.

Curriculum

  • Resident complete 13 rotations from July 1 through June 30
  • Required rotations are four weeks in length
  • One longitudinal experience
  • Resident may not exceed one-third of their experiences in a specific disease state or population (e.g., oncology).

Opportunities for our residents:

  • Teaching certificate through Texas A&M Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy.
  • Manuscript writing program for publication
  • Write and Present an ACCP-accredited CE
  • Attendance at Multiple Research and Pharmacy Conferences for networking and learning
  • Ability to choose a variety of electives to design learning experiences to your interest.
  • Multiple co-residents in a variety of fields (over 30 residents through the BSW system)
  • No On-Call
  • Multiple mentors in a variety of areas 

 

Required:

  • Orientation

  • Pediatric ICU I & II
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Longitutional leadership, administration, research topic discussions
 

Elective:

  • Emergency medicine
  • Infectious diseases
  • Ambulatory care
  • Any adult rotation/elective at BSWHealth - Temple

  • Holidays: One major and one minor holiday per year
  • Weekends: Every 3rd Weekend
  • Evening Staffing- longitudinal 1 day per week from 5 pm until 9 pm  

  • Coordinated program with Texas A&M University Irma Lerma College of Pharmacy for Teaching Certificate
  • Assist with IPPE and APPE students on rotations at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple
  • Provide lectures and assist in the Pharmacotherapy Lab with P3 students at Texas A&M University Irma Lerma College of Pharmacy
  • Provide in-services to healthcare providers

For residents to successfully graduate from the program, they must:

  • Achieve 90 percent of ASHP residency objectives by the end of residency year
  • Complete an Institutional Review Board-approved research project
  • Participate in poster presentations at ASHP, University of Texas Research Day, Baylor Scott & White Health Research Day, and Alcalde Southwest Leadership Conference
  • Deliver a platform presentation at the annual Alcalde Southwest Leadership Conference
  • Create a manuscript of publishable quality
  • Deliver an ACPE-accredited presentation to Baylor Scott & White pharmacists

Application Requirements

  • Have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a fully ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy within the United States or equivalent experience
  • Have a license in good standing to practice Pharmacy from a recognized State Board of Pharmacy or in pursuit of and eligible for Texas licensure by September 1
  • Enrolled in the ASHP Match Process
  • Have a strong interest in clinical practice at a teaching facility

Applicants must also submit through the online PhORCAS system:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A letter of intent detailing reason for interest in completing a PGY1 pharmacy residency, short and long-term career goals, and how our program will assist in meetings those goals
  • Three ASHP letters of recommendation forms (located in PhORCAS). Preferred authors of your letters ranked from most to least desired: P4 preceptors, employers, college faculty, committee and personal colleagues
  • Academic transcripts for professional pharmacy education
