General Surgery Acting Internship Elective

This elective provides an advanced level of surgical training by approaching the functioning responsibility of interns while building on the clinical skills obtained by students in their third year.

Baylor Scott & White Health offers this four-week elective in general surgery to fourth-year medical students. Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited and Accredited osteopathic medical schools are eligible to apply.

Curriculum

Students receive more training in both pre- and post-op care of general surgical patients and expand on their OR and procedural experiences.

Students may rotate in one to two of the following services:

  • Surgical oncology
  • Colorectal
  • Transplant
  • Minimally Invasive
  • Acute trauma care (day/night)
  • Critical Care
  • Vascular

How to Apply

We use the AAMC Visting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) to electronically accept applications, preferred electives and dates.

Applications are accepted beginning April 1. 

Due to the volume of applications we receive, VSLO electives will not be offered or scheduled until applications are complete with all required documents

Prerequisites

Students must be in good standing with their home school and must have completed all third-year course requirements and be eligible to start their fourth year at their respective medical schools by the time they begin their externship.

Diversity Sub-Internship Program for Visiting Students

The Department of Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center has developed a program to increase diversity within our general surgery residency program. The program is 4 weeks in length from July through October for qualified applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in surgical specialties.

The sub-intern will be assigned a chief resident as a mentor during the rotation. In addition a $1500. Stipend is included to help with any transportation or lodging expenses.
