Dermatology Elective

Our goal is to train students to understand how dermatologists apply an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the management of skin disorders.

Baylor Scott & White Health offers a one to four-week elective in internal medicine to fourth-year medical students. Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited medical schools are given preference in filling positions.

The number of available rotation slots is limited and selected applicants are frequently required to write an article suitable for publication under the guidance of the program director.

Dermatology is the specialty of medicine concerned with management of disorders of the skin, mucous membranes, and adnexal structures, including hair and nails.

This elective is designed to expose students to various aspects of dermatology and to gain a working knowledge of how to recognize skin signs of systemic diseases, normal findings (including benign growths of the skin) and common skin malignancies.

The rotation consists primarily of outpatient encounters with some inpatient consultation with an attending physician and/or dermatology resident. Students are exposed to a broad spectrum of disease entities that range from initial diagnosis to disease that are resistant to treatment.

The student are exposed to inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, metabolic, congenital and structural disorders and will be involved in the discussion of differential diagnoses, diagnostic evaluation and outline of treatment plans.

The goal is to have the student understand how dermatologists apply an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the management of skin disorders in a professional and compassionate manner.
