Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine – Baylor Scott & White (BSW) Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in Round Rock – Austin Region is part of Baylor Scott and White Health and includes clinical rotations in both Round Rock and Lakeway Hospitals. This one-year program provides one fellow with 12 months of clinical training in Coronary and Peripheral interventional procedures with exposure to a wide variety of structural heart procedures.

As part of the training, fellows also attend a longitudinal Interventional Cardiology Clinic. Our program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our focus is to ensure fellows are fully prepared to enter Interventional Cardiology Practice and pass the examination by the American Board of Cardiology.

We accept one fellow per year.

Curriculum

Our one-year fellowship training program is structured to provide the fellow with a broad clinical experience necessary to practice in the field of Interventional Cardiology with the expertise to perform interventional procedures in the coronary system and the peripheral vascular arena. By the end of the training, the interventional cardiology fellow will have acquired the knowledge base, judgment and technical skills to become an independent operator in interventional cardiology.

Depending on the fellow's goals, training in the performance of a number of structural heart procedures including TAVR, TEER of the Mitral and Tricuspid valve, left atrial appendage occlusion and ASD/PFO closure is also available.

The Round Rock and Lakeway hospital combined perform more than 1300 diagnostic coronary angiograms, over 600 coronary interventions, more than 100 STEMIs, 150 peripheral interventions, more than 100 TAVRs, 30 mitral and tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repairs and over 80 left atrial appendage occlusion devices per year.

Some of the modalities of advanced percutaneous interventions we use include:

  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Coronary stenting
  • Intravascular ultrasound + OCT
  • Rotational atherectomy
  • Intravascular lithotripsy
  • Thrombectomy
  • Distal protection devices
  • Invasive myocardial ischemia assessment via iFR and FFR

Other interventions include:

  • Carotid interventions
  • Peripheral interventions
  • Valvular heart interventions

    • Percutaneous mitral and tricuspid valve repair
  • Structural heart interventions
    • ASD
    • PFO
    • PDA
    • LAA closures

Our program has a core curriculum that includes a series of lectures covering pertinent topics in interventional cardiology. Fellows are required to participate by presenting several of the topics throughout the year and are expected to complete a compendium of suggested readings provided to them.

The program will provide instruction on a weekly basis in the following areas:

  • Patient selection
  • Pharmacologic intervention
  • Coronary intervention
  • Big artery vascular interventions
