Family Medicine Elective

Our mission is to cultivate and launch selfless, servant-hearted family physicians who are prepared to lead, care for, and advocate on behalf of their patients by creating a culture that excels in community service, clinical excellence, holistic care and an environment of inquiry.

Baylor University Medical Center Dallas offers a  four-week elective in family medicine to fourth-year medical students. The elective is a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences.

Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited medical schools and accredited osteopathic medical schools  are encouraged to apply.

Curriculum

Students will rotate through both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The inpatient experience will be on the family medicine team at BUMC 6 days a week for 2 weeks.

The outpatient experience will be split between the 2 BUMC family medicine residency continuity clinic locations.

How to Apply

We use the AAMC Visting Student Application Service (VSAS) to electronically accept applications, preferred electives and dates.

Applications are accepted beginning May 1.

Because of the volume of applications we receive, we do not offer or schedule an elective until the VSAS application is complete and all required additional documents are received.

Prerequisites

Students must be in good standing with their home school and must have completed all third-year course requirements and be eligible to start their fourth year at their respective medical schools by the time they begin their externship.

Applicants must submit the following with their application:

  • Current medical school transcript
  • USMLE Step 1 score
  • Immunication record from medical school
  • Proof of current influenza vaccination
