Obstetrics and Gynecology Elective

We have a reputation for preparing students for the medical field.

Baylor Scott & White Health offers this four-week elective in obstetrics and gynecology to fourth-year medical students. Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited medical schools are given preference in filling positions.

We accept three students per rotation.

This program combines two weeks each in the obstetrics service and the gynecology service.

This rotation emphasizes clinical care and patient contact, as well as fundamentals in gynecologic surgery. Students join the residency program's gynecology team in caring for gynecologic patients, evaluating clinic patients, and assisting in surgery. They participate in the evaluation and management of gynecologic patients in both the hospital and the outpatient clinic, and they assist in surgical procedures and perform morning and evening rounds.

An upper-level resident and faculty generalist supervise each student. Night call is optional.

This rotation emphasizes clinical care and patient contact. The chief resident and the generalist OB/GYN faculty supervise the students. Students participate in the evaluation and management of laboring patients, as well as postpartum patients.

Along with the obstetrics team, students attend the obstetrics clinics and assist in prenatal care. Night call in labor and delivery is optional.

We use the AAMC Visting Student Application Service (VSAS) to electronically accept applications, preferred electives and dates.

Prerequisites

Students must be in good standing with their home school and must have completed all third-year course requirements and be eligible to start their fourth year at their respective medical schools by the time they begin their externship.
