Infectious Disease Fellowship

Our mission is to train infectious disease physicians who impact patients and communities through clinical excellence, research and leadership.

Our fellows graduate with the confidence to manage the breadth of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and transplant-related infectious diseases.Opportunities for clinical and translational research exist in many areas including infection prevention, HIV/PrEP implementation, and pharmaceutical trials.

The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine - Scott & White Infectious Disease Fellowship is a two-year program that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Clinical rotations take place at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple and the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.

We accept two fellows per year.

Curriculum

The diversity of our training sites, faculty expertise and favorable faculty-to-fellow ratio allows trainees to tailor their two-year training to meet future career goals.

In addition to our core curriculum and clinical rotations, we invite fellows to focus electives and research in one of the following areas:

  • Clinical educator
  • Transplant/immunocompromised infectious disease
  • Infection control/antibiotic stewardship
  • HIV medicine
  • Global health/tropical medicine

Year 1

The first year of fellowship consists of 13 four-week rotations. There are eight blocks of inpatient clinical rotation divided between Baylor Scott & White Health and Central Texas Veterans Health Care. The remaining four blocks are divided between research and outpatient rotations.

Fellows have one half-day per week dedicated to their continuity clinic. This is the case for the entire two-year training period, except for away rotations.

Year 2

The second year of training consists of 13 four-week rotations. Four blocks are dedicated to inpatient care again divided between Baylor Scott & White and Central Texas Veterans Health Care. There is a block at The University of Texas MD Anderson Center for bone marrow transplant experience. The eight remaining blocks are determined by the fellows' interests.

Clinical outpatient rotations include:

  • Wound care clinic
  • Hepatitis clinic
  • General outpatient infectious disease
  • Outpatient antibiotic therapy clinic
  • Travel medicine
  • County STD clinic
  • Infection control

Fellows continue their one half-day per week continuity clinic during the second year.

 

Our conferences occur at noon, three days per week. Our core curriculum is divided over two years and presented by faculty and fellows.

The other conferences include:

  • Journal club
  • Weekly case conferences
  • Morbidity and mortality
  • Book club
  • Fellows' time with PD/APD
  • Interdepartmental case conferences
  • International case conferences with collegues around the globe

 

All fellows participate in meaningful clinical research and quality improvement initiatives. Areas of active interest include:

  • Role of surfaces in prevention of healthcare-acquired infections
  • Phage therapy for MDR infections
  • Pharmaceutical trials including antifungal and antiviral agents
  • Q fever

Ample time and faculty supervision are provided for clinical research activities at Baylor Scott & White – and Central Texas Veterans Health Care.

    Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple is a 640-bed teaching and research hospital with a Level I trauma center.

How to Apply

We use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to electronically accept fellowship applications, letters of recommendations, dean’s letters, transcripts and other credentials directly from your medical school.

Deadline for applications is August 15.


Application Requirements

Applicants must have completed a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program in internal medicine and be eligible for certification in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) prior to beginning fellowship training.
