PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency

Our program uniquely focuses on ambulatory care

PGY1 Community residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

A unique aspect of this community residency program is the increased focus on specialty pharmacy.

Baylor Health Enterprises operates pharmacies within the Baylor Scott & White Health network. Pharmacy services include specialty pharmacy, immunization services, and medication therapy management. In addition, our residents spend time in several ambulatory care clinics, including traditional ambulatory care clinics with a focus on diabetes management to virtual quality management clinics and various specialty clinics.

Baylor Health Enterprises Community-Based Pharmacy Residency is a multi-site residency offering four positions — two in Central Texas at the Temple campus and two in North Texas at the Dallas campus.

Training Goals

The residents practice in year-long longitudinal rotations: management of patients with chronic diseases, medication therapy management and retail pharmacy operations.

The major training goals for our PGY1 residency follow those required by ASHP and include:

  • Patient Care
  • Leadership and Management
  • Advancement of Community-based Practice and Improving Patient Care
  • Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge

Each resident will participate in collaborative research and teaching experiences. Graduates are able to function as adjunct faculty for college of pharmacy.

Learning Experiences

Orientation

Purpose is to provide the resident with a thorough overview of the Residency Program

Academia

Purpose is to teach residents the required skills to participate in an academic setting either in clinical practice and/or academia. 

Experiences:

  • Oversight of APPE and/or IPPE students on rotation
  • Pharmacotherapy lab facilitation
  • Facilitating academic lectures

Ambulatory Care (Primary Care)

Purpose is for residents to gain competence in providing comprehensive medication therapy management to a diverse population and to foster understanding of key principles in primary care clinical programs & administration and applying evidence-based literature.

  • Chronic Disease Management (Diabetes, smoking cessation, hypertenion, hyperlipidemia)

  • Interdisciplinary team setting

Ambulatory Care (Specialty)

Purpose is for residents to gain knowledge and understanding of insurance prior authorizations, appeals processes, and patient assistance programs within the specialty clinics.

  • Investigate formulary and cost-effective medication alternatives for specialty medications
  • Injection training/Medication Education
  • Medication Access
  • Prior Authorization Management

Purpose is for residents to learn the ethical, legal, professional, and managerial functions required of a competent pharmacist in a community-based practice site.

Research

Ppurpose is for resident complete a timely, practical major primary research project relating to a specific aspect of pharmacy practice.

  • Developing a research question, writing a proposal
  • IRB submission and approval
  • Data collection and analyzing data
  • Complete quality improvement project/research
  • Present research at national and regional meeting

Leadership and practice management

Purpose is for resident to gain exposure to and experience in the following areas: leadership and management functions, quality improvement of the medication use process, and regulatory / legal requirements regarding pharmacy.

Application Requirements

Eligible candidates must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and Texas licensure eligibility.

An on-site interview is required. Employment is contingent upon satisfying Baylor Scott & White Health's employment eligibility requirements.

Applicants must also submit:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • A letter of intent detailing reason for interest in completing a PGY1 community residency, short and long-term career goals and how our program will assist in meetings those goals
  • Three ASHP recommendation forms, with at least one completed by an ambulatory care supervisor (if possible/applicable)
  • Academic transcripts for professional pharmacy education
  • A recent professional photograph
